NEW YORK, NY— The year 2014 has been a great year at Sotheby’s. From the beginning of the year to the end, the auction house presented works by famous artists that made record auction results. In November during the Impressionist & Modern Art Evening sale in New York, for instance, Alberto Giacometti’s Chariot sold for £63,130,745 / $100,965,000, while Amedeo Modigliani’s Tête sold for £44,222,473 / $70,725,000, establishing a record for the artist at auction.
The Old Master & British Paintings Evening sale in London in December also established a new art auction record. JWM Turner’s Rome, From Mount Aventine sold for £30,322,500 / $47,430,454. Estimated at £15 – 20 million, the piece surpassed all estimation, setting a record for the artist at auction. Below are the Top Ten Highest Prices at Sotheby’s Auctions in 2014.
