NEW YORK, NY— Bonhams is preparing for a landmark moment this February. The company will move its American headquarters to 111 West 57th Street, an address long associated with New York’s cultural prestige. This relocation places the 230-year-old auction house inside the meticulously restored Steinway Hall. It also marks a bold investment in the world’s most competitive art market.

Bonhams New Headquarters: A Major Expansion for a Global Auction Leader

The new flagship spans roughly 42,000 square feet. This gives the company a far larger footprint than its former Madison Avenue location. The space is designed to host major sales and high-profile exhibitions, and it features towering triple-height galleries. An 80-foot glass atrium creates a dramatic setting for art, design, luxury goods, and collectors’ items. The added space will support accelerated growth and attract high-caliber consignments across more than 60 categories, ranging from contemporary art to vintage automobiles.

Steinway Hall’s Grand Return to Public Life

Steinway Hall is a Beaux-Arts masterwork by Warren & Wetmore, the architects of Grand Central Terminal. The hall has been closed to the public for nearly 10 years. JDS Development Group and Gensler have led its revival and restored its defining features. The restoration includes the limestone façade, domed rotunda, hand-painted mosaic ceilings, and sculptural stonework. The new Bonhams Steinway Hall Headquarters will uphold the hall’s legacy of musical and cultural excellence. It will reopen the site to visitors and integrate it into a broader cultural calendar with complementary exhibitions, curated installations, and live performances.

According to Lilly Chan, Bonhams’s U.S. managing director, the transformation offered an immediate sense of home. She emphasized that the organization needed a unified, modern headquarters that could accommodate both staff and an expanding client base. The choice of 57th Street—often referred to as Manhattan’s “cultural corridor”  aligns with the auction house’s objectives of restructuring efforts. Furthermore, it puts it closer to some of the city’s most influential museums and luxury boutiques. According to Chan, the design of the new headquarters will foster accessibility and inclusivity for emerging and seasoned collectors alike.

The New Bonhams Steinway Hall Headquarters is a Defining Moment

CEO Seth Johnson noted the significance of the space, calling the new flagship a statement of intent for Bonhams’s U.S. ambitions. The scale and visibility of the new Bonhams headquarters, he notes, will attract exceptional consignments and elevate the firm’s presence in a highly competitive market.  The new Bonhams Steinway Hall Headquarters will consolidate New York, Los Angeles, and New England operations. Expectations are that this new approach will help streamline its nationwide activity and enhance its reach with collectors across the country.
