MANILA, PHILIPPINES – Filipino art reached unprecedented heights during a recent auction at León Gallery. This highly anticipated event showcased exceptional artworks, drawing global attention from collectors and art enthusiasts alike.

Fernando Amorsolo’s Masterpiece

One standout piece was Fernando Amorsolo’s renowned painting, Under the Mango Tree (1929). This masterpiece, celebrated for its vibrant depiction of rural life, sold for an astounding PHP 57.6 million (approximately $1 million), setting a new record for the artist. This significant sale is particularly notable as it was the first time the painting had been available for public auction in 95 years.

“It proves that the Philippine art market is thriving,” said Jaime Ponce de Leon, Director of León Gallery. “We faced challenges due to market fluctuations, but our rare offerings helped us overcome these obstacles.”

Historical Significance of Filipino Art Auction Record

In addition to Amorsolo’s work, the auction featured historical documents, including the only known copy of the “Acta de Proclamacion de Independencia del Pueblo Filipino” (Philippine Declaration of Independence). This document fetched PHP 11.4 million (about $200,159), setting a new benchmark for Philippine historical artifacts.

The auction also highlighted the works of Alfonso Ossorio, a prominent avant-garde artist. His untitled abstract painting from 1957 achieved a remarkable PHP 33.6 million (approximately $590,000.) Ossorio’s work, influenced by Abstract Expressionism, reflects the dynamic shifts in Filipino art during the mid-20th century.

Founded in 2010, León Gallery has become a leading platform for Filipino art. Since its inaugural auction in 2013, it has consistently focused on promoting high-caliber artworks. Ponce de Leon emphasized the gallery’s unique position: “We may be smaller than major American auction houses, but our agility allows us to respond effectively to market trends.”
