WASHINGTON, D.C. – If you’re attending Otakon 2024, one performance you can’t miss is from the Mikage Project. This talented trio of Japanese traditional instrument professionals is set to captivate fans of anime, manga, video games, and Far East music enthusiasts with some of their renowned tracks.

The performance at Otakon will help the Mikage Project achieve one of its primary goals: connecting with the next generation by recreating folk songs from all over Japan in a modern style. Founded in December 2020, the Mikage Project blends the soul and spirits of Shinto and Buddhism into their music. The group consists of Koki Sato, who plays the Shakuhachi (bamboo flute); Sho Asano, who plays the Tsugaru Shamisen (a traditional Japanese stringed instrument); and Takashi Honma, who plays the twenty-five-string koto (a Japanese harp).

Ongoing Success and Future Releases

In April 2021, they released their first EP, Mikage Project, featuring recordings of “Kokirikobushi,” a folk song from Toyama Prefecture. The group’s rise to fame includes multiple media appearances. In October 2021, they made their national broadcast debut on NHK’s show “Minyo Tamashii Furusato no Uta” (“Folk Song Spirit of Hometown”). Since then, they’ve been featured on various NHK shows, including a notable collaboration with folk song legend Naoyuki Harada. Additionally, Sho Asano received recognition as a folk song concierge.

In May 2022, Mikage Project released their second mini-album, NEO BUSHI. They also performed at the Tokushima Prefecture Awa Odori Association New Year Performance in January 2022. Their efforts to create a new wave of Japanese folk songs are gaining increasing support. Fans can look forward to their fourth mini-album, TOU, set for release in June 2024.
