Black masculinity and the beauty of black life are the focus of recent paintings by Baltimore artist Megan Lewis, whose works are a major attraction at Expo Chicago.

CHICAGO-Months before the opening of this year’s Expo Chicago, art enthusiasts eagerly anticipated discovering artists whose works would captivate art collectors. With galleries from around the world showcasing exceptional artistic endeavors, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and mixed media art, there was hope for a rich and diverse experience. The art fair has certainly lived up to expectations. Since its opening, the remarkable works on display have been mesmerizing art lovers .

One artist who has particularly captured the attention of both art lovers and collectors is Megan Lewis. Her paintings are prominently on display at the Galerie Myrtis Booth 405. Despite this being the gallery’s inaugural participation in the event, the collection of works on display has made it a standout attraction.

About Megan Lewis

Born in 1989 in Baltimore, Megan is a talented painter recognized for using various mediums to create art. Her works investigates critical perspectives on social, historical, and cultural issues related to Black life. Her recent collection focuses on the Black male experience, particularly within the context of Baltimore.

Through her vivid and evocative compositions, Lewis offers viewers thought-provoking glimpses into the daily lives of men in her community. Whether based on real-life experiences or imagined scenarios, her artworks provide insight into the multifaceted ways in which men of the African diaspora navigate the world.

Challenges Faced by Black Men

In her paintings, Megan captures the universal truths of the challenges faced by Black men. Among these are the desire to assert their personhood, gain respect, and challenge stereotypical beliefs and biases. A crucial element in Megan’s creative process is texture, which helps enhance the emotional depth of her art. There are also flowers, which artist uses to symbolize a deliberate decision to live in the present. Additionally, they emphasize the beauty of each moment and the need to stay in the present. With the inclusion of these elements, Megan strives to inspire viewers to embrace life’s lessons. More importantly, they encourage them to look forward to the future.

Her art seeks to establish real connections with its audience, surpassing intellectual and artistic boundaries. Above all, to present a new outlook on Black masculinity and emotion.

Dr. Myrtis Bedolla, Founding Director and Head Curator of Galerie Myrtis, describes Megan’s work as capturing the essence of the leisure Black male experience and culture through vibrant narrative paintings. She praises her use of bold colors, expressive brushstrokes, and captivating compositions that help bring life to her subjects, evoking emotions and inviting viewers to engage with the stories within her canvases.

In addition to Megan Lewis, the Galerie Myrtis booth is also showcasing contemporary artists who are socially conscious. The list include Monica Ikegwu, Ronald Jackson, and Delita Martin. In their works, they explore the cultural, social, and political landscapes of our world while showcasing the beauty of humanity.
