After months of painstaking investigation, Brand received a breakthrough in June 2020 when a photograph surfaced depicting the missing painting alongside an issue of The New York Times. Brand collaborated with law enforcement agencies and utilized his extensive network of confidential contacts within the criminal underworld throughout his investigation. This strategic partnership culminated in the arrest and conviction of a man known as “Nils M” in connection with the theft. DNA evidence linked Nils M to the crime scene, resulting in his sentencing to eight years in prison and bringing a measure of justice to the case.
