Legacy Russell Joins Studio Museum in Harlem from Artsy

ART NEWSAfter years at Artsy and traveling the world, Legacy Russell has joined the Studio Museum in Harlem as Associate Curator, Exhibition.

NEW YORK, NY-Legacy Russell has been appointed Associate Curator, Exhibitions at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of the museum made the announcement Friday. In the announcement, Thelma Golden said, “It’s a great pleasure to welcome Legacy Russell to The Studio Museum in Harlem.” She described her thus:

She is an exciting emerging curatorial voice, combining keen critical and visual intelligence with broad experience in the cultural sphere and an energetic spirit of public engagement. As we enter our fiftieth anniversary year and prepare to begin construction on our new home, we’re thrilled to have Legacy join us in advancing the mission of the Studio Museum.”

A well-tested art professional, Russell comes to the Studio Museum with extensive experience that will benefit the museum in so many ways. In addition to her wide-ranging experience in organizing exhibitions and events, writing for diverse audiences from popular to academic, Russell recently served as the European Gallery Relations Lead at Artsy.

In accepting the appointment, Legacy Russell said she was “deeply honored to be joining the curatorial team at The Studio Museum in Harlem”. For her, this is perhaps the most august time to be joining the museum because of the great achievements the museum has made in recent times. According to her Joining the museum “during a momentous period of growth, collaborating with inspiring colleagues as we turn the page together toward an exciting new chapter in the Museum’s history’  provides the opportunity to help the museum grow as we  “as we continue to make space for visual culture and critical cultural dialogue.”

A graduate of Macalester College with an MRes in Art History from Goldsmiths, University of London, Legacy Russell’s writing and curatorial practice focuses on gender, performance, and new media. Her first book titled Glitch Feminism will soon be published by Verso. Some of her curated exhibitions and projects include a series of multimedia events exploring digital feminism and celebrating queer nightlife at ICA London in winter 2017.  Her critically acclaimed show Wandering/WILDING: Blackness on the Internet in collaboration with IMT Gallery and ICA London in winter 2016, continues to be one of the high points of her curatorial career. Legacy Russell has also hosted the 2017 Serpentine Marathon Guest, Ghost, Host: Machine!

While working at Artsy, Legacy Russell was responsible for building the company’s global brand and gallery partnerships across the UK and Europe. In addition to her writing career and work at Artsy, Russell has also held positions at the Brooklyn Museum, The Bruce High Quality Foundation, Creative Time, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

In the last five years, Legacy Russell has worked as the visual arts editor for Apogee Journal. Additionally, her essays and interviews have been widely published in BOMB, The White Review, Rhizome, Guernica, Berfrois, Screen Shot, and others.  Russell has also lectured internationally on the intersection of art, the internet, and feminism at venues including the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich; Rewire Festival 2018; IMPAKT Festival 2017; and the London School of Economics.
