AUSTRALIA— The Australian Ballet and Orchestra Victoria are set to give life to some of Edgar Degas’ famous ballet works. In a performance that is already generating great interest in global art circles, the dancers will transport visitors to the National Gallery of Victoria to 19th-century Paris to experience the life of dancers on and behind the stage.

In the performance, ballerinas from The Australian Ballet will pose alongside Degas’ works. The artist spent a major part of his art career drawing and painting ballerinas as they perform or prepare to perform.

Accompanying the ballerinas in their dance performance and depiction of the movements of dancers in Degas’ paintings is Orchestra Victoria. The band will play some of the most beautiful music from the period.

The performance is an addition to Degas: A New Vision, a retrospective exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. It features works by the artist who was described by his peers as the best painter of dancers. The performance by the Australian Ballet provides a window into what inspired Degas to depict dancers in his work.

The performances will be held August 18 from 12.15-1.15pm and August  27 from 12.15-1.15pm at the NGV International
