CHICAGO– Rare coins collectors did not hold back at Heritage Auctions 2015 CICF World Coins & Ancient Coins Signature Auction.  In an auction that brought $6.6 million, collectors proved that the market for World & Ancient Coins continues to grow. “Overall, prices were stronger than in our last auction,” said Cristiano Bierrenbach, Vice President of Heritage Auctions.

Two very rare coins competed for top honors at the 2015 CICF World Coins & Ancient Coins Signature Auction. One of the rare coins, an 1814 Brazilian Joao VI gold ingot 1814 set the bidding war in motion. A treasure of Brazilian numismatics, the extremely rare coin generated intense bidding war that when it ended, the coin had realized $82,500.

The bidding war over the 1814 Brazilian Joao VI gold ingot 1814 was just the beginning of a highly contested auction that proved that the market for rare coins continues to grow. When an 1894-A French Republic gold 100 Francs, MS64 PCGS got on the floor, the bidding war continued. A beautiful rarity in a high grade, a rare coins collector bought it for $82,500, equaling the price paid for the 1814 Brazilian Joao VI gold ingot 1814.

Following in tow of the precious and  rare coins is an 1862 George IV gold Proof 5 Pounds PR62 Cameo PCGS that sold for $76,375, a world record for the type. The sale according to Heritage Auctions shows an “increased in demand for early 19th century British coins.”

In addition to the 814 Brazilian Joao VI gold ingot 1814 and 1894-A French Republic gold 100 Francs, MS64 PCGS, there were great auction prices in the Ancient side of the rare coins auction. The top lots came in the form of two spectacular decadrachms — A Time of Dionysius I (406-367 BC) AR decadrachm signed by Kimon and a Time of Dionysius I (406-367 BC) AR decadrachm signed by Euainetos — realized $70,500 and $58,750 respectively. Both of these exceptional rare coins came from the Allatini Collection, with pedigrees that extended well back more than 80 years.

Heritage Auctions sale of important rare coins did not end with the top lots. Several Brazilian rarities achieved premium auction prices. A 1724-A Joao V gold 10000 Reis U58 NGC realized an impressive $49,350. Several Canadian rare coins made their presence felt with a 1916-C George V gold Sovereign MS64 NGC that brought a highly respectable $39,950.

Speaking on the result from the rare coins sales, Bierrenbach said that the demand for significant rare coins continues to attract collectors from across the globe. He notes that “This is a very strong market right now,” adding that “Even though we’ve sold higher grade pieces in the past — just last September Heritage sold a PR63 example for $67,563, itself a world record for the type — the bar just keeps getting pushed higher.”
